Laylah Ali- Something interesting that I noticed about this artist would be the way she uses instances in her childhood to make all of her paintings. She states that she loved cartoons when she was little, and that dodge-ball and racism had a big impact on her experiences as a child. I think that it is a great idea to do something for this upcoming project based on something that means a lot to me. I have had some great examples, but I don't think that it would work unless I was passionate about the topic. I am very passionate about my family, so I am trying to incorporate this project with my family life. She reminds me a lot of the Sue Coe who is very indulged in her work also. Both are very committed to their beliefs and sticking to one area of concentration. Alis' work can also be very vulgar with its reference to slavery which reminds me of Kara Walker. All together, I have never been a fan of cartoons, but Ali is using a very clean method to her work, and I am all about being neat and clean, so hopefully I can incorporate this into my project as well.
Alfredo Jaar- He also incorporates his background into his artwork. Most of his work appeals to the Spanish speaking community because that is who he is trying to talk to. He is from Chile', so that is all he knows. I have never really thought about who I want my audience to be. I have always figured that people would like my art if they were like me at all. I guess since I want to do something that incorporates my family, I am going to speak to viewers who are also family lovers. They will understand family more than a person who has no communication with their family would. Jaar said that all of his work incorporates beauty because life is nothing without beauty. Since we are doing posters that make us mad, I don't know how I will be incorporating beauty, but I do like his point behind it. Some of his work reminds me of the Helvetica video that we watched. It is simple, but it catches your eye and speaks to you, but this is what the people in the video disliked about the old graphic designs. I do not know where I will settle in this project yet. I am going to start taking pictures soon to see what I like and what my style will be. I know I like clean, but also want something that people will look at and feel some type of weight on their heart.
